Whether you spend a lot of time on your computer or not – one thing is undeniable: YouTube is one of the biggest forces of the net and that’s for a reason. Not only can you rent films and TV shows, you can also watch vlogs and get inspired by DIY videos and ideas. And don’t tell me you have never watched one of the million cat videos 😉
YouTube has a lot to offer which can be daunting sometimes as there are seemingly never ending choices. Here are four YouTube series that will have you click PLAY in no time and will make you come back for more.
ONE || The Michalaks
Vlogs (video blogs/video diaries) have been big on YouTube for a couple of years. This family redefines the whole format by producing cinematic videos that will leave you in awe. Steph and Hannah are London expats who live in Bath with their two adorable boys Grayson and Rufus and have been documenting their lives on YouTube for five years. The beautiful imagery and music in combination with cynical comments by Steph, the dad of the family, will make you cry, laugh and think. Most videos cover some sort of topic – from happiness to homelessness, from stress to family. I am always looking forward to Sunday when new content goes up. The thing I love the most is that the family manages to see the beauty in the smallest things – the videos always make me smile.
TWO || Actors on Actors
In this format Variety magazine sits down two actors to interview each other. Not only do those videos spark interesting conversations about the acting industry, it also gives an insight into Hollywood, the life of an actor and the struggles they have to face. Also, it is pretty funny to see the actors fan-girling/fan-boying over each other 😉 My favourite interviews include:
- Kate Winslet – Gary Oldman
- Hugh Jackman – Willem Dafoe
- Ralph Fiennes – Christoph Waltz
- Jennifer Aniston – Emily Blunt
- Natalie Portman – Michelle Williams
THREE || Kids Meet…
There is a quote in German which says “a child’s mouth always tells the truth”. Now imagine a bunch of children speaking to people that you wouldn’t meet on a daily basis. I am talking about people that are blind, deaf, are bodybuilders or contortionists, over 100 years old or little. The YouTube channel HiHo Kids does exactly that. The resulting conversations are both hilarious and heart-warming. Not only do the kids ask questions, an adult would probably never dare to ask, they are also very empathic and love to learn – small kids with big hearts.

FOUR || city.ballet
Dancing has always been a huge part of my life. So I guess it isn’t surprising, that I love to watch lots of dance videos online. A YouTube series that I keep on coming back to is city.ballet. Narrated and produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, it shows the life and work of New York City Ballet dancers. It covers everything from training sessions and show preparations to relationships, ranks and injuries. Although the series only consists of 12 short episodes, you get an amazing glimpse into the life of a professional ballet dancer.

Ob man nun viel Zeit an seinem Computer verbringt oder nicht – eine Sache ist unbestreitbar: YouTube ist eine der größten Mächte im Weg und das aus gutem Grund. Als Nutzer kann man dort nicht nur Filme und Serien mieten, sondern auch Vlogs ansehen und sich von DIY Videos inspirieren lassen. Und sagt mir nicht, ihr habt noch nie ein Katzenvideo genossen 😉
YouTube hat scheinbar unendlich viel zu bieten, was die Auswahl oft schwierig macht. Hier sind fünf überraschend coole Videosammlungen, für die ihr sicher gerne PLAY drückt
EINS || The Michalaks
Vlogs (Video Blogs/Video Tagebücher) sind seit Jahren sehr beliebt auf YouTube. Diese Familie gibt dem Format durch die cinematisch produzierten, traumhaften Videos eine komplett neue Bedeutung. Steph und Hannah sind Londoner, die mit ihren zwei kleinen Söhnen Grayson und Rufus in Bath leben und ihr Leben seit einigen Jahren dokumentieren. Die wunderschönen Videos und bezaubernde Musik in Kombination mit zynischen Kommentaren des Familienvaters Steph wird euch zum Lachen, Weinen und Denken bringen. Die meisten Videos beschäftigen sich mit einem bestimmten Thema – von Glücklichsein und Familie über Obdachlosigkeit und Stress ist alles dabei. Ich freue mich immer auf Sonntag, wenn neuer Content online geht. Am liebsten mag ich die Leichtigkeit der Videos und dass es die Familie schafft, scheinbar unbedeutenden Momenten Bedeutsamkeit zu geben – Lächeln garantiert.
ZWEI || Actors on Actors
In diesem Format lädt Variety Magazine immer zwei Schauspieler zu gegenseitigen Interviews. Das ist nicht nur der Ursprung für interessante Gespräche über die Branche, die ZuschauerInnen bekommen auch einen Einblick in die Hollywood Maschinerie, das Leben eines Schauspielers und die damit verknüpften Herausforderungen. Außerdem ist es ziemlich witzig zu sehen, wenn die Schauspieler sich als Fans des Gesprächspartners outen 😉 Meine Favoriten aus der Serie:

DREI || Kids Meet…
Das Zitat “Kindermund tut Wahrheit kund” hält sich seit Jahrzehnten (zumindest im österreichischen) Wortschatz. Jetzt stellt euch mal vor, eine Gruppe Kinder spricht mit Personen, die man nicht unbedingt täglich trifft – blinde oder taube Menschen, Bodybuilder, Schlangenmenschen, Über-100-jährige und kleine Menschen. Der YouTube Channel HiHo Kids macht genau das. Die daraus resultierenden Konversationen sind unglaublich witzig aber auch herzerwärmend. Die Kinder stellen nicht nur Fragen, die ein Erwachsener wohl nie so stellen würde, sie sind auch unglaublich empathisch und wissensdurstig – kleine Menschen mit großen Herzen eben. Meine Favoriten aus der Serie:

VIER || city.ballet
Tanzen spielt seit meiner Kindheit eine große Rolle in meinem Leben. Da ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass ich mir online gerne Tanzvideos ansehe. Eine YouTube Serie, die ich immer wieder streame, ist city.ballet. Produziert von Sarah Jessica Parker, zeigt sie das Leben und die Arbeit der New York City Ballet Company. Neben Trainings und Showvorbereitungen sind auch Beziehungen, Positionen in der Company und Verletzungen Thema. Obwohl die Serie nur aus 12 kurzen Episoden besteht, bekommt man einen interessanten Einblick in das Leben professioneller Balletttänzer.

I don’t watch a lot on YouTube, mainly makeup videos (and most of the time that’s for work) and the occasional cat or critter video (my cat likes to watch them, haha!) These sound really interesting!

Ich finde YouTube kann wirklich süchtig machen. Es gibt so viele interessante Beiträge und Berichte zu verschiedenen Themen. Auch für die Kinder ist es super. Ob Musik oder videos, wir nutzen es wirklich viel. Liebe Grüße von Nini
